ROCHESTER, Mich. - The South Dakota State volleyball team, playing without sophomore standout Kelli Fiegen due to injury, fell to Oakland in five sets on Friday in Rochester, Mich., snapping the Jackrabbits Summit League win streak at two.
The loss drops the Jacks to 3-6 overall, 2-1 in league play. Oakland improves to 8-1 overall and remains perfect in league play at 3-0.
Despite the five set affair, the lead never once changes hands and the only two tie scores in the match cam at 1-all and 4-all in the first set.
Oakland snapped the second and final tie of the game with a 4-0 run and never trailed again in winning the first set 25-17.
The table quickly turned in the second and third sets, as the Jacks scored first and cruised to 25-18 and 25-15 wins.
The Golden Grizzlies came right back in the fourth set and sealed the 25-16 win with an early 4-0 run that put them up 9-4 and a 6-0 run to close the set and force a fifth set.
The Jacks could not break the trend of the game, as OU scored the first three points of the fifth set before winning it by the score of 15-8.
Brittany Holbrook led four OU players in kills with 16, and did so with a .433 hitting percentage (16-3-30). She also added a match-high three block assists.
A trio of freshman led the SDSU offense in the loss, led by Fiona Jones, who led the Jacks with 12 kills, Kelly Herrmann reached double-digit kills for the first time in her career, finishing the match with 11. Kaitlin Klingemann's 10 kills also marks a career-high.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday against IPFW in Fort Wayne, Ind., at 7 p.m. ET. The Mastodons dropped a five set match to North Dakota State on Friday.
