INDIANAPOLIS—Despite having three players in double figures, the South Dakota State women's basketball team suffered a 68-67 Summit League loss to IUPUI Sunday afternoon in front of 268 fans in The Jungle.
The Jacks, now 11-6 overall and 2-2 in league play, got 15 points and a game-high 8 rebounds from senior Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.), 12 points from sophomore Chynna Stevens (Clark) and a career-high 13 points off the bench from freshman Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.).
IUPUI, now 7-9 overall and 2-1 in Summit League play, was led by Nevena Markovic's 21 points. Shaquira Scott and Mikale Rogers had 16 and 13 points, respectively.
The Jackrabbits, who led momentarily at 9:11 in the first half, took their first lead in the second half, 67-66, when Stevens hit a three-pointer from the wing with 24.6 left in the game. The Jaguars responded with a long 12-foot jumper from Markovic with 8.7 on the clock. SDSU had a shot under its basket but missed the shot as time ran out.
Trailing 55-45 with 9:31 to play, the Jackrabbits outscored the Jaguars 22-13 with Thompson scoring five points during the stretch and Stevens 8 of her 10 second-half points.
SDSU shot 44.6 percent from the field, but just 68.8 percent from the free-throw line.
South Dakota State returns to action Thursday when it hosts Omaha at 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of Frost Arena.
