VERMILLION, S.D.—Freshman Macy Miller scored a career-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough as South Dakota State lost 82-78 at South Dakota in Summit League women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in front 3,145 fans.
Miller (Mitchell) was 9 of 13 from the field, 2 of 4 from three-point range and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. The point guard also collected a personal-best five steals. Sophomore Chynna Stevens (Clark) recorded her third double-double of her career with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.) added 13 points.
Raeshel Contreras led South Dakota (14-4, 4-1) with 32 points. Nicole Seekamp and Heidi Hoff added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
In a game that had 13 lead changes, including nine in the second half, the Jackrabbits (12-7, 3-3) took a two-point lead, 54-5,2 on a traditional three-point play by Miller with 11:42 to play. USD responded with a 14-7 run to take a five-point lead, 66-61, with just under five minutes to play.
Stevens and sophomore Kerri Young (Mitchell) hit back-to-back three-pointers to regain the lead, 67-66, but the Coyotes used an 8-2 run to push the lead to 74-69 with 2:28 to play. The Jackrabbits got within two-points on a pair of Miller free throws at 1:38, but USD hit 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch for the win.
South Dakota State returns to the road Jan. 21 when it travels to Western Illinois for a 7 p.m. game.
