BROOKINGS, S.D.—The South Dakota State University women's basketball team opened Summit League play with an 85-44 win over Denver University Friday night in front of a season-high 2,101 fans at Frost Arena.
The Jackrabbits, 10-4 overall and 1-0 in league play, had four players score in double figures. Sophomore Kerri Young (Mitchell) scored a season-high 21 points, fueled by four three-point field goals. Senior Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) added 13 points while senior Rachel Walters (Sioux Falls) and freshman Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) each recorded 12 points in a reserve role. Both Walters and Thompson tied their career highs in points.
Denver (3-12, 0-1) had Jordan Johnston and Alecia Espinoza each score 10 points.
Overall, South Dakota State's 12 three-point field goals are the most since the Jackrabbits made 15 against North Dakota State Feb. 18, 2012, in an 88-43 win. The 41-point victory margin is the largest since that win over the Bison.
The Pioneers opened the scoring but Chynna Stevens (Clark) answered with a three-point field goal and the Jackrabbits never trailed again. Stevens' three-pointer was part of the Jackrabbits' 22-6 run to open the game. South Dakota State led 46-13 at half.
South Dakota State travels to Fargo, N.D., Sunday for a 1 p.m. game against North Dakota State, which defeated Oral Roberts, 77-64, at Scheels Arena. The game will be televised on the Midco Sports Network.
