MACOMB, Ill.—Sophomore Mikala Hora and sophomore Ashley Beaner dominated offensively in the South Dakota State volleyball team's 23-25, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-19 win over Western Illinois Friday night in Summit League action.
With the win, the Jackrabbits snap a 15-match Summit League road losing streak and improve to 3-20 overall and 2-5 in league play. The Leathernecks fall to 3-18, 1-5.
"Tonight we had our strongest offensive performance of the year," first-year head coach Nicole Cirillo said. "To win on the road is another big step for the program and I couldn't be more proud of this team."
Hora (Yankton) had a career- and match-high 25 kills while hitting .413 and collecting her sixth double-double with 17 digs. Beaner (Sioux Falls) also posted a career high with 20 kills and hit a personal-best .633 (20-1-30). Junior Nazya Thies (Winside, Neb.) added 11 kills, 8 digs and 2 solo blocks. Defensively, senior Lizzie Palmer (Sioux Falls) had a match-best 22 digs.
Peyton Crosser led Western Illinois with 21 kills and Kaili Simmons had 14 digs.
In the first set, after eight ties, including at 22-22, senior Wagner Larson (Sioux Falls) registered a kill to give the Jackrabbits a 23-22 lead. Western Illinois then used a block and three SDSU hitting errors to win the set.
After trailing 12-9, the Jackrabbits used a 7-1 run to take a 16-14 lead in the second set. SDSU then closed the set on a 9-5 run fueled by five Hora kills to tie the match.
Beaner and Thies registered the final four kills in the third set to take a 2-1 lead.
In the final set, the teams were tied at 15 before Hora, Beaner and Thies collected eight kills during a 10-4 run.
