KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Sophomores Ashley Beaner and Mikala Hora led the South Dakota State volleyball team (1-12) in a 25-10, 25-16 and 25-15 loss to UMKC (7-3) Thursday in the Jayhawk Invitational.
"Our serve and pass game was week tonight," first-year head coach Nicole Cirillo said. "Weak serving allowed UMKC to run a terminating offense while our struggles passing the ball kept our offense from doing its job."
Beaner (Sioux Falls) had 6 kills and hit .263 for the match while Hora (Yankton) collected 6 kills and 6 digs. Senior Wagner Larson (Sioux Falls) added 5 kills and hit .231. Defensively, senior Lizzie Palmer (Sioux Falls) had 11 digs.
Madison Mosier led UMKC with 11 kills and a .647 hitting percentage. Taryn Miller collected 19 digs and Jessia Hendin seven service aces.
The Jackrabbits opened the third set with a 3-0 run with a pair of kills from Beaner and one from Hora. SDSU had a 7-6 lead before UMKC took a 15-7 lead with nine-straight points. The Jacks made it 17-11 with a pair of kills from Larson, a service ace from senior Alana Pengilly (Watertown) and an UMKC error. The Kangaroos outscored SDSU 8-4 for the win.
UMKC jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the second set on the strength of two kills, three service aces and a pair of SDSU errors. The Jacks battled back to 23-16 after two kills from Hora and one from senior Carley Gerving (Lead-Deadwood), but the Kangaroos scored the final two points on kills.
In the first set, the Jackrabbits and the Kangaroos went kill for kill for the first four points until UMKC used a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. After a service error by the Kangaroos, Hora and Gerving had back-to-back kills to pull SDSU to within four, 11-7, but UMKC closed the set with a 14-3 run.
The Jackrabbits return to action Friday at noon when they continue play in the Jayhawk Invitational against No. 17 Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.
