LAWRENCE, Kan.—Senior Wagner Larson and sophomore Ashley Beaner led the South Dakota State volleyball team (1-13) despite losing 25, 15, 25-9 and 25-13 to 17th-ranked Kansas (10-0) Friday at the Jayhawk Invitational.
Larson (Sioux Falls) had five kills and hit .455 while Beaner (Sioux Falls) had five kills in the loss. Defensively, senior Lizzie Palmer (Sioux Falls) led the Jacks with six digs.
"We showed a lot more fight and resilience today," first-year head coach Nicole Cirillo said. "I'm happy with the way we kept our composure against another top-25 ranked team."
Madison Rigdon led Kansas with 16 kills and a .560 hitting percentage. Cassie Wait collected a match-high 15 digs.
In the first set, the Jackrabbits battled with the Jayhawks point for point to 7-7 before KU outscored SDSU 8-3 and take a 15-10 lead. Kanas took advantage of Jackrabbit errors to earn the win.
The Jackrabbits struggled in the second set giving KU a 12-2 lead. SDSU collected just three kills in the 25-9 loss.
Kansas continued to dominate offensively, collecting 20 kills and hitting .459 in the third set despite SDSU hitting an efficient .219.
The Jackrabbits return to action Saturday when they play Missouri State at noon and Gonzaga at 5 p.m. in the Jayhawk Invitational.
