BROOKINGS, S.D. – Oct. 28, 2016 – Senior
Ashley Beaner had a career-high 25 kills Friday night but it was not enough as the South Dakota State volleyball team suffered a 27-25, 24-26, 17-25, 25-22, 15-11 loss to Oral Roberts in front of 225 fans in The Summit League action at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits fall to 3-20 overall and 2-9 in The Summit League. Junior
Ellie Benson finished with 18 digs while sophomore
Mattison Munger recorded 46 set assists and 14 digs. Senior
Nazya Thies added 13 kills.

"We went back-and-fourth in the first set and it kind of fell out of our hands," second-year head coach
Nicole Cirillo said. "They took control right off the bat in set two and we let them back in it. At the end of the day, we took the set, gained a lot of confidence and took set three. We just couldn't hold the lead long enough in set four, forcing set five."

Beaner had three-straight kills in the first set to give the Jackrabbits a 25-24 lead. However, Oral Roberts responded with three-straight kills for the 27-25 win.

"Ashley was fantastic. Obviously, after set one I told Matti to keep feeding her the ball," Cirillo said. "We made them hold true with our middles a little bit to help open her up a little bit more. Obviously, that strategy continued throughout the match."

In the second set, the Jackrabbits used an 8-2 run to take an early lead. Oral Roberts rallied to take a 21-18 lead after three aces by Laura Milos, who recorded 26 kills. Beaner started the Jackrabbits on the comeback trail with a kill before adding another to make it 24-23, Jackrabbits. After ORU tied the match, sophomore
Sierra Peterson recorded a kill on a Golden Eagle over pass for the 26-24 win.

Beaner had two kills during an 8-2 run as the Jackrabbits pulled away from a 5-5 tie for a 13-7 lead. Beaner recorded the set-winning kill for the 25-17 win.

The teams traded points for most of the fourth set before Oral Roberts took a 19-16 lead. The Jackrabbits rallied to trail 20-19 after kills by Munger and Thies. Oral Roberts answered with a 3-0 run and then won the set on a kill by Karyn Chrisman.

Milos recorded two kills and two aces as Oral Roberts opened the fifth set with a 7-0 run. Thies answered with back-to-back aces and a kill while Beaner recorded two kills during the Jacks' 6-2 run. Peterson had a kill to bring the Jackrabbits within two, 11-9, and force an Oral Roberts time out. The Golden Eagles closed the set with a 4-2 run for the win.
