"On the women's side I think we did everything we could," said head coach
Rod DeHaven. "Hats off to USD and NDSU, they're tough teams and they were better than us today. Exciting to see two of our women contend for a league championship. Those girls are tough and they've made nice progress and it's really gratifying to see the results after the consistent work that they've put in throughout the year. I think there are some goals at the regional meet that can still be achieved. Our first two women, it's one of those things, can they be top 40? Can they contend for all-region? And those are things that we will find out. Certainly they are running well, and just like we have had guys qualify for the NCAA's, we would love to have women there as well. We'll see how it translates. Today, it wasn't an easy day. Emily ran really fast when you consider the conditions and she said that she had more in the tank, which is great to hear, because that certainly isn't the case for everyone at this stage in the season."
The Jacks finished with a final score of 55 points, behind South Dakota (42 points) and North Dakota State (49 points). Donnay led the way, finishing in 21:05.9 with
Rachel King (second, 21:12.7) close behind.
Emily Berzonsky finished seventh in 21:54.1 for first-team all-league honors. Junior
Halie Mechels (16th, 22:38.3) and Freshman
Kendra Dykstra (29th, 23:17.4) finished off the Jackrabbit top five. Donnay, King and Berzonsky each earned first-team all-league honors. Donnay was named the championship most valuable performer.
Also competing for SDSU was
Jamie Schweiss (30th, 23:27.6),
Emma Nelson (33rd, 23:34.5),
Jenna Grossenburg (24:05.1) and
Rachel Propst (24:41.6).
SDSU will return to action Nov. 11 in Iowa City, Iowa, for the NCAA Midwest Regional.
