BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State splits up as half the team attends the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet in Verona, Wis., while the other half heads to La Crosse, Wis. for the Jim Drews Invitational on Saturday morning.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN
"Both teams are excited to toe the line this weekend in Wisconsin. Pre-Nationals will offer tremendous competition and a great environment for our student athletes to test themselves against several regionally ranked teams. It will also present an opportunity to compete against some of the teams we saw at the Griak Invitational, which will provide us with an additional goalpost before the championship portion of our schedule begins."
WISCONSIN PRE-NATIONALS
Information | Course
The Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet will be hosted on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. Along with hosting Wisconsin's home meets, the Zimmer Championship Course has hosted several post-season events including the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championship, the 2010 Big Ten Championship, and six NCAA Great Lakes Regionals. This year, Wisconsin will host the NCAA Cross Country Champsionship on the Zimmer Championship Course, giving the Jacks a chance to run the course beforehand, should they qualify for the championship meet.
The Pre-Nationals meet will host six different races: Men's and Women's "A" Race, Men's and Women's Open Race, and the Men's and Women's "B" Race. South Dakota State will run in the Men's and Women's "B" Race. The Women's "B" Race will start at 12:40 p.m., followed by the men at 1:20 p.m.
ATHLETES TO WATCH
Carson Noecker will be one to watch at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet. Last time out, Noecker set a course record for the Edgebrook 8K course with a time of 24:11.3. The SDSU course record for the Zimmer Championship course is currently held by Trent Lusignan, who set the record in 2015 with a time of 23:52.7.
Noecker has run two 8K's so far this season and has yet to break past 24 minutes, however, the sophomore's current personal record is 37 seconds faster than Lusignan's course record. Noecker set his personal record last season at the Arturo Barrios Invite. The sophomore ran with top-teams such as Indiana, Tulane, and Texas A&M to post a time of 23:15.7. This weekend, the Jacks will run with Power Four competitors from Illinois State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, and more, setting Noecker up well to post a new PR.
On the women's side,
Meghan Ford will be the athlete to watch. Last time out, Ford finished in the top-five at the SDSU Classic with a new personal record of 21:22.2. Rachel King currently holds the Jackrabbit course record for the Zimmer Championship Course. King set her record in 2018 with a time of 20:55.9. In order to set a new record, Ford will have to run almost 30 seconds faster than her current PR. Like Noecker, Ford will be among top athletes from Power Four teams, giving her the opportunity to pace herself for a new PR.
