BROOKINGS, S.D. – Nov. 5, 2016 – The South Dakota State volleyball team scored the match's last four points to record a win in the fifth set and defeat Western Illinois, 25-13, 25-13, 12-25, 22-25 and 15-11 Saturday night in The Summit League action in front of 414 fans on Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits, now 5-21 overall and 4-10 in league play, were led by senior
Ashley Beaner's 15 kills. Sophomore
Sierra Peterson added a career-high 12 kills while hitting a school record .706 (12-0-17) for five matches. Junior
Ellie Benson added 20 digs and senior
Nazya Thies 14.

"We had our ups and downs throughout the entire match, but we are hopefully learning from the mistakes that we made," second-year head coach
Nicole Cirillo said. "We were able to stay confident and keep swinging. The ball didn't bounce our way all night, but we kept a steady mentally throughout the entire match to keep us in it as long as we did and pull out the win."

Beaner gave the Jackrabbits an 11-9 lead with a kill. She later added a service ace for a 14-10 lead. Western Illinois committed a hitting error for the set's final point.

Beaner helped start SDSU on a 7-0 run in the first set as the Jackrabbits broke out to a 15-9 lead. Freshman
Ashlynn Smith, who recorded five kills in the set, recorded back-to-back kills to five the Jacks a 21-13 lead. She would record two more kills, including the set-winner, in the 25-13 victory.

Peterson led the way in the second set, recording six kills. The teams traded runs before the Jackrabbits scored three-straight points for an 18-15 lead. Western Illinois rallied to tie the set, 23-23, before freshman
Makenzie Hennen recorded a kill and Peterson had a solo block to give the Jackrabbits the win.

Western Illinois opened the third set 10-3 and never looked back in the 25-12 win.

The Leathernecks began the fourth set with a 7-1 run but SDSU rallied to trail 11-8 after a kill by Thies. Western Illinois scored three-straight points to take a 23-20 lead before a Peterson kill and a Leatherneck error made it 23-22. A SDSU error allowed Western Illinois to record the 25-22 win.
