LINCOLN, Neb. - The South Dakota State cross country teams wrapped up competition at the Woody Greeno Invitational on Saturday morning. The men finished fourth (104 points) in the University Division standings while the women scored a sixth-place finish (144 points).
Â
Leading off were the women, who competed against three Big Ten teams and four other Summit League foes. In all, there were six regionally ranked teams, including Michigan who are ranked No. 12 nationally, at Mahoney Golf Course, the 2018 Big Ten cross country championship site. The Jackrabbits were able to pull away from Air Force (finished 10th), who is ranked eighth in the Mountain Region, according to USTFCCCA.
Â
The men followed, also competing against three Big Ten schools and three other Summit League contenders. The field was also stacked with regionally ranked competition (Midwest region: Minnesota - No. 4, won; Iowa - No. 8, runner-up; Nebraska - No. 9 - third). SDSU managed to beat North Dakota State (sixth, 139), South Dakota (eighth, 239), and North Dakota (ninth, 265).
Â
Competition was tough, but so was the course and weather conditions, reach as high as 80 degrees with 70 percent humidity before the men's race. Even after the meet directors moved the schedule ahead an hour in anticipation of the heat.
Â
"There was decent competition at the meet today," said head coach
Rod DeHaven. "The course was a little more challenging than expected and the heat was a factor. You could see many of the runners were already dripping with sweat before the race started."
Â
MEN
The men's team, the fourth-place finishing team in Mahoney Golf Course, had sophomore
Gabe Peters lead the way - placing eight overall with a personal-best mark in the 8k (25:12.9). He was the first non-Big 10 student-athlete across the finish line. He beat his previous-best by 15.4 seconds, set back at the 2017 Pre-National Invite in Louisville, Ky. It was his first race in the blue and yellow where he lead the team.
Â
Sophomore
Micah Mather (25:36.7) and redshirt freshman
Michael Schwinghamer (25:39.5) finished behind Peters, going 17th and 18th with a 3.2-second gap. Both of them recorded personal-best marks, beating there 2017 SDSU Classic 8k-marks - Mather by 3.7 seconds and Schwinghamer by 1:15.5 minutes.
