South Dakota State women's basketball took a 79-73 loss to Kansas State Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits overcame an early 18-3 deficit to lead by as many as eight points in the third quarter before falling to the Wildcats.
Four Jackrabbits scored in double figures, led by 14 points apiece from
Paiton Burckhard and
Tori Nelson. The duo also led the Jacks on the glass with seven and six rebounds, respectively. Burckhard went 3-for-3 from the 3-point line.
Myah Selland came off the bench in her third appearance of the season to chip in 13 points and give out three assists.
Haley Greer rounded out the Jacks in double digits with 11 points, including three 3-pointers.
The Wildcats built an 18-3 lead over the first seven minutes of the game. The Jackrabbits' only points in that time came from a Nelson free throw and deep 2-point jumper from Selland. SDSU scored the next seven points to cut the Wildcat advantage to eight and ended the quarter trailing 22-10.
K-State pushed its lead back to 14 during the second quarter. State used a 14-4 run in the final three minutes of the half, however, to come back within three points of the Wildcats.
Tylee Irwin started the run with a layup, followed by a 3-pointer each for
Madysen Vlastuin and Burckhard. Burckhard, Irwin and Greer added two more points apiece to end the half down just 40-37.
Two
Kallie Theisen free throws opened the second-half scoring and put the Jackrabbits within one. Nelson gave the Jackrabbits their first lead of the contest at 42-40 with a corner 3-pointer on their next possession. Irwin extended the home team's lead to eight points at 62-54 with a pull up jump shot from the free throw line. The Wildcats used the final two minutes of the period to outscore the Jacks 8-2 and SDSU led by two with 10 minutes to play.
SDSU held off K-State until the 3:48 mark of the fourth quarter, when the Wildcats took the lead back on a pair of layups. Selland pulled the Jacks back within two with 18 seconds on the clock but K-State went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the last 14 seconds to seal the win.
Lindsey Theuninck dished out a season-high five assists while Greer and Selland added three each.
Ayoka Lee put up 38 points for the Wildcats and had 14 rebounds and six blocks. Serena Sundell added 16 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and five steals.
NOTES
- The Jackrabbits drained 11 3-pointers in the game, a season-high.
- SDSU is now 0-7 all-time against K-State.
- State scored 27 points in both the second and third quarters, the most in a single quarter for the Jacks this season.
- SDSU slips to 3-7 overall this season, Kansas State is 9-2.

SDSU will host Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday night in the final tuneup game before Summit League action starts next week.
