CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - South Dakota State women's basketball moved to 3-5 on the season Saturday with a 59-50 loss to Northern Iowa at the McLeod Center.
The Jackrabbits held an 11-point lead partway through the third quarter before a 10-0 run brought the Panthers back within one. UNI held the Jacks scoreless over the final 3:40 of the contest and put up 12 points in that time for the nine-point victory.
After a .667 field goal percentage in the second quarter, SDSU was held to just 22 percent shooting in the second half.
Tori Nelson and
Haley Greer posted season highs with 13 and 10 points, respectively, to pace the Jackrabbits. Nelson was in double figures for the third time this year and matched her season best of six rebounds. Greer went 4-for-4 from the field.
Tylee Irwin and
Kallie Theisen grabbed seven rebounds each and Theisen gave out two assists.
Lindsey Theuninck's three assists was a team high.
Neither team could get much going through the first quarter as UNI led 13-11 after the first 10 minutes. The Jackrabbits were 8-for-12 from the field in the second period and used nine Nelson points to take a 30-24 lead into the locker room.
The Jackrabbits' largest lead came at the 5:57 mark in the third quarter.
Paiton Burckhard sank a free throw to put SDSU up 11 before the Panthers scored 10 unanswered. SDSU did not score again until a pair of Irwin free throws with 38 seconds remaining in the period.
UNI took the lead early in the fourth with five straight points to open the period. SDSU regained the lead with a 3-point by Greer and held the advantage until UNI's 12-0 run to end the game.
NOTES
- The Jackrabbits fall to 0-4 on their opponent's home court this season.
- Nelson led the Jackrabbits in scoring for the second time this season.
- Theisen's seven rebounds is a season high.
- 50 points scored and 18 made field goals are both season lows for SDSU.
