The South Dakota State women's swimming and diving team continues a busy opening month of competition by traveling Saturday to Iowa State for a dual against the Cyclones.

Action is slated for 2 p.m. at Beyer Pool in Ames, Iowa.

The Jackrabbits enter the matchup with a 2-2 record in duals after winning two of three matchups last weekend. SDSU dropped a 189-109 decision at Augustana on Oct. 14, then posted a pair of wins over Northern State (118-75) and Iowa Central (133-47) in a home triangular a day later.

Iowa State was edged in its season-opening dual at Nebraska on Oct. 14, dropping a 151-149 decision to the Cornhuskers.

LAST WEEK: The Jackrabbits went 2-1 in duals over a full weekend of competition in which they competed on back-to-back days.

Augustana 189, South Dakota State 109
Elisabeth Timmer won three times, but Augustana came out victorious in 11 of 16 events to down South Dakota State, 189-109, in a women's swimming and diving dual Oct. 14 at the Midco Aquatic Center in Sioux Falls.

Augustana, the eighth-ranked team in NCAA Division II, improved to 4-0 in duals this season. SDSU dropped to 0-2.

A senior from Savaneta, Aruba, Timmer dominated the freestyle events, winning the 50-yard race in 23.28 seconds, as well as posting victories in the 100 (51.63 seconds) and 200 (1 minute, 54.79 seconds). Timmer also was part of the Jackrabbits' runner-up 400 freestyle relay, teaming with Emma Bachelder, Emma Walz and Mia Pendleton for a time of 3:33.50.

Freshman Sara Juez claimed the other event victory for the Jackrabbits on the swimming side, clocking a winning time of 2:13.57 in the 200 butterfly. The Spaniard also was runner-up in the 100 butterfly in 58.54 seconds.

Also winning for the Jackrabbits was Aleni Stoakes in the 3-meter diving competition. The senior from Lincoln, Nebraska, posted a winning score of 212.65 points before taking third on the 1-meter board with 196.00 points.

Augie's Ella Ward-Zeller matched Timmer's win total with victories in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley. The Jackrabbits' Sianne Downes was runner-up in both backstroke events, including being clipped by .06 seconds in the 200 back after Downes clocked in at 2:05.52.

Freshman Marissa Branham turned in a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, 2:29.56, for SDSU.

South Dakota State claimed eight event titles, including both relays, en route to sweeping a women's swimming and diving triangular from Northern State and Iowa Central Oct. 15 at the Stanley J. Marshall Center Pool.

The Jackrabbits evened their dual record at 2-2 on the young season by defeating Northern State, 118-75, and recording a 133-47 victory over Iowa Central.

SDSU opened the meet with the B 400-yard medley relay quartet of Sianne Downes, Morgan Nelson, Jenna Currier and Elisabeth Timmer recording a winning time of 3 minutes, 58.20 seconds.

Timmer and Downes were among the individual winners for the Jackrabbits, with Timmer leading the way with a pair of victories. The senior from Savaneta, Aruba, claimed the 100 butterfly in 58.90 seconds, then came back later in the meet to win the 500 freestyle in 5:20.14, 20 seconds ahead of her nearest competition.

Downes, meanwhile, captured the 100 backstroke with a pool-record time of 57.51 seconds.

The Jackrabbits notched victories in three other freestyle events: Emma Bachelder in the 50 (:24.97), Gabriella Gnewuch in the 200 (1:59.55) and freshman Emily Shuttleworth in the 1,000 (11:01.51). SDSU claimed the top four spots in both the 50- and 1,000-yard races.

Bachelder added a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle.

SDSU closed the meet with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay as the foursome of Emma Walz, Katie Pattee, Mia Pendleton and Grace Witherspoon teamed for a winning time of 1:39.73.

TIMMER TIES SUMMIT RECORD: South Dakota State's Elisabeth Timmer was honored Tuesday as TicketSmarter Summit League Women's Peak Swimmer of the Week after winning event titles in five different events in competition last weekend.

A senior from Savaneta, Aruba, Timmer swept the freestyle events in an Oct. 14 dual at Augustana, winning the 50-yard race in 23.28 seconds, as well as the 100 (:51.63) and 200 (1:54.79). She also was a member of the Jackrabbits' runner-up 400 freestyle relay team.

A day later, in a triangular against Northern State and Iowa Central, Timmer came out on top in the 100 butterfly (:58.90) and 500 freestyle (5:20.14), while anchoring the winning 400 medley relay (3:58.20).

Timmer's award was the eighth of her career, tying her Sabrina Sabadeanu of South Dakota (2017-20) for the most Peak Swimmer honors in Summit League history.

JACKRABBITS PICKED FIFTH: South Dakota State has been picked to finish fifth in the Summit League's women's swimming and diving standings, according to a preseason polls conducted among the league's head coaches that was released in September.

Denver was picked to repeat as league champion, picking up seven first-place votes in the women's survey. South Dakota was selected for second place, followed by Summit League newcomer Lindenwood in third place and Omaha in fourth.

In all, eight schools are scheduled to compete at the 2023 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships, which are set for Feb. 22-25 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Also new to Summit League competition for the upcoming season is Southern Indiana.

In addition, Jackrabbit seniors Elisabeth Timmer and Aleni Stoakes were recognized by The Summit League as Swimmers and Divers to Watch.

Timmer, a native of Savaneta, Aruba, holds school records in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. She was a four-time Summit League Women's Swimmer of the Week honoree a season ago before posting a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle at the league championships.

Stoakes, from Lincoln, Nebraska, was the Jackrabbits' top diver a season ago and earned her first Summit League Diver of the Week award. She was a consolation finalist on the 3-meter board at the 2022 Summit League Championships, placing 12^th.

COACH HUMPHREY: Doug Humphrey is in his sixth season as head coach of the South Dakota State men's and women's swimming and diving teams.

During the 2021-22 season, Humphrey led the Jackrabbits to a third-place finish in the men's division and a fourth-place showing in the women's division at the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships.

The previous campaign, one that was abbreviated by the COVID-19 pandemic, SDSU recorded runner-up finishes in both divisions, continuing an upward trend in the standings. SDSU had previously finished third in the men's race in each of Humphrey's previous seasons on deck with the Jackrabbits, along with a pair of third-place performances on the women's side.

Prior to SDSU, Humphrey served as the head women's swimming and diving coach at Northern Iowa for five seasons. His Panther squads showed steady progression in the Missouri Valley Conference, including posting back-to-back third-place finishes at the conference championship his final two seasons in Cedar Falls.

Humphrey served as the assistant swimming coach at the University of Nebraska from 2000-12 under Olympic gold medalist Pablo Morales. He swam for the Huskers from 1991-96 and later served as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater.

A LOOK AHEAD: The Jackrabbits close out October by traveling next Friday (Oct. 28) to Minneapolis for a triangular against host Minnesota and St. Thomas. Competition, which also feature the men's teams in action, is set for 5 p.m. at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
