PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas - The South Dakota State women's basketball team dropped a 72-65 contest to UCLA Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. The Bruins' win avenges a semifinal loss the the Jacks in the WNIT a season ago.
The Jackrabbits (2-2) trailed by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter but battled back to within five with 1:20 left to play. UCLA (4-0) went 5-for-8 from the free throw line while forcing two SDSU turnovers in the final stretch to come away with the seven-point win.
Haleigh Timmer paced a trio of Jacks in double figures. Timmer scored 12 points, followed by
Paiton Burckhard and
Tori Nelson with 11 points apiece. Nelson was held to three field goals but went 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
Myah Selland and
Kallie Theisen added eight points apiece.
The Jacks and Bruins traded points through the opening 10 minutes, which featured two ties and six lead changes. UCLA regained the lead for good with an 8-0 run to end the period up 25-21 over the Jacks.
Selland quickly cut the deficit to just one with a 3-pointer to start the second period, but UCLA responded with a pair of baskets to push its advantage back to six points. Later, Nelson and Timmer combined for five-straight SDSU points to come back within three before the Bruins scored six-straight to lead 44-35 at the halftime break.
The Bruins continued to pull away in the third quarter, stretching its lead to 13 points with a seven-point run. Theisen scored the final four points of the period from the free throw line to make it a nine-point game with 10 minutes left to play.
UCLA pushed the lead to 15 before
Madysen Vlastuin drained a 3-pointer with 6:54 on the clock, sparking a 9-0 Jackrabbit run that brought them back within six.
Ellie Colbeck forced a steal with 90 seconds to play, which went on to set up a Burckhard layup that brought it back to within five. From there, UCLA did enough from the free throw line to hang onto the lead.
Both teams shot 42 percent from the field, but the Bruins had a 27-21 edge in made fields goals. UCLA's Chrisma Osborne put up 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting and a 6-for-8 showing from the free throw line. Emily Bessoir and Gabriel Jaquez chipped in 11 points each.
NOTES
- The Jacks are now 2-1 all-time against the Bruins. All three games have come in the last 12 months.
- The Jacks' 21 made field goals is a season low, but their six 3-pointers made is a season high.
- Paiton Burckhard leads the country in career games played (134).
