MEET 8: South Dakota State at NCAA Midwest Regionals |
BROOKINGS, SD – The South Dakota State cross country teams head to Stillwater, Oklahoma to compete for a chance at championship qualification at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday.
Action at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the women's 6k and will continue at 11:30 a.m. with the men's 10k race. An awards ceremony will follow at 12:15 p.m.
32 scoring women's teams and 28 scoring men's teams will be in action at the regional, featuring familiar competition from the conference and other meets previous meets.
31 teams qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships with the top two teams from each of the nine regions (18 total) earning automatic bids. The remaining 13 spots are at-large selections made by the NCAA Committee. 38 individual qualifications are also available for the top four runners in each region not from a qualifying team. Two additional athletes are then chosen from the remaining national pool.
2022 REGIONAL RECAP:
WOMEN
The South Dakota State women's cross country team posted a 10
th-place finish in the team standings and Leah Hansen recorded a top-20 individual placing during competition Friday at the NCAA Midwest Regional.
A junior from Willmar, Minnesota, Hansen covered the 6,000-meter Gans Creek Cross Country Course in 20 minutes, 40 seconds to finish 19
th out of 230 runners. She was running 12
th through the 2,000-meter checkpoint and stayed in the second pack of competitors for the remainder of the race.
Olivia Howell of Illinois was the race winner in 20:02.9.
Caitlin Bright led a late surge that propelled the Jackrabbits into the top finish by a Summit League team as she moved up 19 spots over the final 1,000 meters to place 73
rd overall in 21:32.7.
Mya Kizer (88
th, 21:40.1) and
Nicole Greyer (94
th, 21.43.2) also posted top-100 finishes for SDSU.
Kayla Christopherson completed the scoring runs for the Jackrabbits, placing 113
th in 21:53.6. Rounding out the SDSU contingent were
Emma Ecker (125
th, 22:02.2) and
Claire Beckman (131
st, 22:09.6).
The Jackrabbits entered the meet ranked 15
th in the Midwest Region. Their 10th-place showing is the highest at an NCAA Division I regional in program history.
Oklahoma State and Northwestern earned automatic bids to next week's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State finished first with 58 points, followed by Northwestern with 88. Bradley took third with 99 points.
MEN
Led by top-25 individual finishes by
Ben Olson and
Joseph Minor-Williams, the South Dakota State men's cross country team recorded a sixth-place finish in the team standings Friday at the NCAA Division I Midwest Regional.
Olson broke the 30-minute mark on the 10,000-meter Gans Creek Cross Country Course, clocking in at 29 minutes, 59.7 seconds. Minor-Williams followed slightly behind in 24
th place with a time of 30:08.2. Both Jackrabbit runners remained in the lead pack throughout the race and held spots in the top five at the 6,000-meter mark.
Daniel Burkhalter made a push in the back half of the race to finish just outside the top 25, posting a 27
th-place time of 30:09.7.
Thomas Breuckman (62
nd, 30:43.7) and
Max Selbach (73
rd, 30:56.4) completed the Jackrabbits' scoring runs.
Closing out the SDSU effort were
Mason McDonald (78
th, 30:59.8) and
Lucas Caminiti (88
th, 31:07.6).
Oklahoma State's Isai Rodriguez overtook leader Ryan Martins of Loyola (Ill.) in the final 250 meters to post a winning time of 29:40.1. OSU and Tulsa tied for the team title with 49 points to earn automatic bids to next week's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, with Tulsa earning the top spot on a tiebreaker by having three of its five scoring runners place ahead of the Cowboys. Iowa State was third with 73 points, while the Jackrabbits tallied 204 points for their sixth-place finish, which ranked as the highest by a Summit League squad.

WOMEN
Leah (Hansen) Hisken finished as runner-up in the women's 6k race to lead South Dakota State to a second place team finish at the Summit League Cross Country Championships on Friday at Edgebrook Golf Course.
Hisken ran a 21:06.8 for second place in her final cross country championship as a Jackrabbit while
Jessica Lutmer took ninth in 21:24.5 and
Mya Kizer finished 10
th with a 21:28.8.
Claire Beckman was next for the Jackrabbits as she clocked a 21:54.1 for 14
th place and
Caitlin Bright rounded out the scoring runners in 20
th place with a time of 22:11.8.
Nicole Greyer clocked a 22:21.7 for 23
rd place,
Grace Waage finished 27
th in 22:32.3 and
Emma Gonzalez ran a 22:35.6 to take 29
th place.
Emma Ecker claimed 35
th place in 22:56.0 and
Sierra Watterud crossed the finish line in 23:10.7 for 43
rd.
Hisken received All-League First Team honors and Lutmer, Kizer and Beckman were recognized on the All-League Second Team.
South Dakota won the women's title with 50 points as the Jackrabbits finished second with 55 points. North Dakota State came third with 69 points, North Dakota finished fourth with 78 points and St. Thomas scored 122 points for fifth. Omaha (160 points), Kansas City (195 points) and Oral Roberts (212 points) rounded out the scoring runners.
MEN
The South Dakota State men's cross country team won their record-extending eighth straight Summit League crown while also capturing multiple individual accolades at the league championships on Friday at Edgebrook Golf Course.
Leading the way for SDSU was freshman
Carson Noecker, who claimed the individual crown, Championship MVP and Newcomer of the Championship awards.
According to the league, he is the only male student-athlete to be crowned Championship MVP and Newcomer of the Championship at the same league meet since the creation of the awards. He is also the third consecutive Jackrabbit to win the MVP honor.
Noecker clocked a 24:17.2 to take the top spot in the 8k, finishing more than 20 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Josh Becker was next for the Jacks as he ran a 24:51.3 for fifth place, followed directly by
Daniel Burkhalter in sixth with a 24:53.1.
Christian Noble claimed 16
th place with a time of 25:15.4 and
Cody Larson rounded out the scoring runners with a 25:23.3 for 18
th place.
Jackson Dutcher ran a 25:29.7 for 20
th, Will Lohr came 26
th in 25:44.0 and
Luke Johnson took 38
th in a personal best 26:09.1.
Mason McDonald (54
th, 27:27.6) and Andrew Moeller (58
th, 28:17.2) rounded out the competing Jackrabbits.
Noecker, Becker and Burkhalter all received All-League First Team honors. Burkhalter was also recognized as the Men's Scholar of the Championship.
South Dakota State finished with 46 points, tying with North Dakota State, but was ultimately crowned champion in accordance with NCAA tiebreaker guidelines. North Dakota finished third with 66 points, St. Thomas came fourth with 71 points and South Dakota scored 150 points for fifth. Oral Roberts (177 points) was sixth and Kansas City (187 points) was seventh.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The Week Five Division I cross country rankings decided by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association were announced Oct. 30
th with the Jackrabbit men dropping one spot to 9
th in the Midwest region while the women maintained 9
th.
SDSU MEN PICKED FIRST, WOMEN SECOND IN PRESEASON POLL: The SDSU men were chosen to continue their streak of Summit League championship titles while the women were picked second following a 2022 season that saw a record seventh-straight title for the men and second place finish for the women.
