BROOKINGS - The South Dakota State women's basketball team picked up its 15th straight win Thursday night as they beat Denver 82-34 at Frost Arena.
SDSU improves to 22-5 on the season and 15-0 in Summit League action while Denver falls to 11-16 overall and 7-9 in conference play.
The Jackrabbits put together strong performances on both ends of the floor, shooting at a 57 percent clip while holding Denver to just 22 percent. Denver's 34 points is both its lowest output of the season and SDSU's fewest points allowed this year.
On the offensive end,
Myah Selland paced the Jackrabbits with 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting.
Tori Nelson went 8-for-10 from the floor to match her season best of 17 points.
Haleigh Timmer and
Paige Meyer added 11 points apiece.
State put up the first five points of the contest and never trailed. The Jacks led by 10 after 10 minutes, then made it a 15-point game with the first five of the second quarter. An 18-2 run to end the second period stretched SDSU's lead to 29 at halftime - 44-15. The run was highlighted by six points from Selland and a pair of and-1 buckets from Nelson and
Brooklyn Meyer.
SDSU scored the first seven points of the second half and rolled through the rest of the contest. A layup from Nelson in the final minute of the third period pushed the margin over 40 points and
Madysen Vlastuin made it a 50-point game with a 3-pointer late in the fourth.
The Jackrabbits recorded 21 assists on 33 made baskets, led by five helpers from
Dru Gylten, four from
Paiton Burckhard and three from Selland. All but three Jacks tallied at least one assists on the night.
Defensively,
Kallie Theisen notched nine rebounds and four blocks for the Jacks, both team highs. Selland and Burckhard collected five boards each while Selland and
Paige Meyer both had two steals. As a team, the Jackrabbits posted a 42-30 advantage in rebounds and 10-7 edge in steals.
Makayla Minett scored 11 points and had eight rebounds for Denver.
NOTES
- The last time SDSU held a team to 34 points or below was against North Dakota State during the 2018-29 season.
- SDSU has held its opponent to fewer than 10 points in six of the last 12 quarters played (North Dakota State, South Dakota, Denver).
- Paiton Burckhard played in her 157th career game. She is two shy of matching Tylee Irwin's SDSU record of 159 career appearances.
- The Jacks have won 25 straight Summit League games at home, a streak that began in the 2020-21 season.
