No. 9 South Dakota State takes on No. 8 Southern California in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday evening in Blacksburg, Virginia.
This is the third all-time meeting between these programs. The most recent was in 2006, when the Jacks knocked off then-No. 19 USC in Brookings at Frost Arena. It was SDSU's first ranked opponent and first ranked win of their Division I era.
SDSU enters the tournament with a 28-5 overall mark and a 21-game win streak. The Jacks breezed through the Summit League tournament with a 32-point average margin of victory. SDSU is making its 11th NCAA appearance in 15 seasons of eligibility.
USC is 21-9 on the year. The Women of Troy have been off since falling to Oregon State in the opening round of the Pac-12 tournament on March 1. USC is making their 17th trip to the tournament and first since 2014.
Although these teams have not played each other in recent history, there are connections between the two. SDSU's
Dru Gylten played the undergraduate portion of her career in the Pac-12 at Utah. Gylten and the Utes went 1-1 against USC in her senior season (2021-22). USC's Kadi Sissoko and Dominique Onu both have experience against South Dakota State. Sissoko was a freshman on the 2019 Syracuse team that was upset by SDSU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She also played for Minnesota last season, who SDSU beat in the second round of the WNIT. Onu is a mid-season transfer to USC from UCLA, who the Jacks have played three times in the last two seasons.
