ST. PAUL, Minn. — South Dakota State recorded a pair of top-three finishes in the relays to open women's swimming and diving competition Thursday at the Tommie Invitational.
The Jackrabbits began Thursday's evening session with a third-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Katie Pattee, Jenna Currier, Hannah Miller and Emma Schultz clocked a season-best time of 1 minute, 35.29 seconds.
To wrap up the first of three days at the Anderson Athletics and Recreation Center Pool, the 400 medley relay foursome of Lily Esmas, Miller, Sara Juez and Gigi Hioki combined for a runner-up time of 3:52.60.
Hioki was the top Jackrabbit finisher in an individual event, posting a fourth-place time of 5:03.93 in the 500 freestyle. Poppy Mead finished eighth in 5:08.83.
Jenna Currier and freshman Kailee Crane each turned in fifth-place efforts. Currier touched the wall in 23.62 seconds in the 50 freestyle, while Crane finished fifth in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 2:07.81. Marissa Branham took seventh in the 200 IM at 2:08.23.
Also earning a berth in an event final was Anna Mae Castro, who placed seventh in 1-meter diving with a score of 196.70 points over six dives.
SDSU stands second among four squads in the team race. South Dakota leads with 576 points, followed by the Jackrabbits with 339. Host St. Thomas is third with 303 points, with Green Bay in fourth with 280 points.
Competition resumes Friday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and event finals at 5:30 p.m.
