BROOKINGS, S.D. - Paced by big nights from
Brooklyn Meyer and
Mesa Byom, the South Dakota State women's basketball team topped Omaha 79-57 Saturday at Frost Arena.
The Jackrabbits improve to 20-5 on the season and 12-0 in the Summit League. Omaha falls to 6-20 overall and 2-11 in conference games.
Meyer scored 22 points and tallied eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks. Byom put up a career-best 20 points to go with 10 rebounds for the first double-double of her career.
Byom did the majority of her damage in the opening 20 minutes as the junior went 3-for-3 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe for 11 first-half points to go with seven boards.
Sixteen of Meyer's points came after halftime. The sophomore opened the second half with a personal 6-0 run that forced an Omaha timeout less than two minutes in. The Meyer-Byom duo helped the Jackrabbits dominate the paint for a 48-16 advantage in paint points.
Madison Mathiowetz tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds for SDSU, also the first double-double of her career. She added two assists. The Jackrabbit offense shot above 50 percent for the eighth time this season, posting a .526 mark. Byom was 6-of-7 from the field and Meyer was 8-for-11 to lead the way.
Mathiowetz and
Jenna Hopp knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to put South Dakota State up nine seven minutes into the game, but Omaha outscored the Jacks 11-3 over the final three minutes of the quarter to come back within one at 18-17. Byom scored SDSU's first six points of the second quarter as the Jacks worked to create some separation. State led 38-31 at halftime. Following Meyer's six-point run to open the second half, Omaha used an and-one bucket to cut its deficit back to 10, 44-34, then a 10-0 SDSU run with four different scorers pushed the Jackrabbit lead to 20. A pair of
Tori Tollefson free throws late in the fourth gave SDSU its largest lead of the game - 26 points - at 79-53.
Tori Nelson and
Paige Meyer contributed eight points apiece for SDSU. Nelson also had five assists, four rebounds, one block and one steal.
Omaha's Grace Cave led all players with 25 points and six steals.
NOTES
- SDSU has won at least 20 games in 13 straight seasons and 20 out of 24 seasons under head coach Aaron Johnston.
- The last time two Jackrabbits recorded a double-double in the same game was the WNIT Championship game in April 2022 when Myah Selland and Kallie Theisen achieved the feat.Â
- Brooklyn Meyer's there blocks brings her within one of tying the SDSU sophomore record of 52. She needs one block to tie to record and two to break it.
- Brooklyn Meyer surpassed 600 career points.
