South Dakota State is a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will take on No. 5 Utah in the First Round Saturday afternoon in Spokane, Washington.
Saturday will be the fourth all-time meeting between these teams. Utah holds a 2-1 edge in the series.
SDSU enters the tournament having won 21 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in program history. That streak is second only to last season's 22-game win streak that was snapped by No. 1 Virginia Tech in the Second Round. The Jackrabbits are 27-5 on the season and went 19-0 against conference opponents between the regular season and tournament play. SDSU is 11-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. This is the program's 12th trip to March Madness is 16 seasons of DI postseason eligibility.
Utah is 22-10 on the year. The Utes topped No. 11 Arizona State in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament before falling to No. 3 UCLA in round two. Utah is making its 20th NCAA Tournament appearance overall and third under head coach Lynne Roberts.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State enters the national postseason with a 27-5 overall record and a 21-game win streak. The Jacks' last loss was a 46-58 defeat at No. 21 Creighton Dec. 21. Four of SDSU's five total losses have come to ranked teams.
- HC Aaron Johnston is making his 12th to the NCAA Tournament in 16 seasons of DI postseason eligibility. South Dakota State is 5-11 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with its deepest run being the Sweet 16 in 2019.
- SDSU has been a 12-seed once before, in 2016. The Jacks opened the tournament with a 74-71 upset win over Miami before falling to No. 4 Stanford 66-65 in the second round.
- Six Jackrabbits earned All-Summit honors, headlined by Brooklyn Meyer being named Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year and Aaron Johnston being named Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career.
- Paige Meyer was named MVP of the Summit League Tournament. She was dominant over three games in Sioux Falls, averaging 20.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
- Paige Meyer enters Saturday's game eight points shy of 1,000 in her career.
- SDSU ranks fifth in the country in 3-point percentage (.383) and 10th in overall field goal percentage (.482). Paige Meyer leads the 3-point shooting with a .432 mark while Brooklyn Meyer shoots .591 from the floor (15th in the country).
- A trio of Jackrabbits averaged double figures in overall games this season - Brooklyn Meyer (17.0 PPG), Paige Meyer (15.3 PPG) and Madison Mathiowetz (11.8 PPG).
- Brooklyn Meyer has scored 543 points and blocked 60 shots in her sophomore season, both of which are the most by a sophomore in program history.
- SDSU has knocked down at least seven 3-pointers as a team in nine of the last 12 contests. Individually, Mathiowetz has hit at least two treys in each of the last 10.
- Tori Nelson has started 145 games in her career, including every game over the last three seasons. That mark ranks first in program history. She ranks top-20 in career scoring at SDSU and is third in career blocks (144).
- SDSU has won 21 consecutive games, which is the fourth-longest active streak in the country. The streak is the second-longest win streak in program history.
- With this season's 16-0 regular season conference mark paired with their 18-0 record a season ago, SDSU is the first Summit League team to run the table in consecutive seasons. The Jacks ended the regular season having won 47 consecutive Summit regular season games dating back to Jan. 2022. That matches the 10th longest streak in NCAA history.
- SDSU has reached 25 wins for the 13th time in the Aaron Johnston era (24 seasons). The Jackrabbits have won at least 25 games in each of the last five seasons NOT impacted by Covid-19 (excludes 19-20 and 20-21).
