DENVER - The South Dakota State women's basketball team shot 61 percent Saturday afternoon and ran past Denver 79-42 at Hamilton Gymnasium.
The Jackrabbits were paced by
Brooklyn Meyer and
Madison Mathiowetz, who finished with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
Meyer was a perfect 9-of-9 from the field and tallied 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year and 10th of her career. Mathiowetz was 7-of-11 on the afternoon and knocked down four 3-pointers to go with eight boards. The duo tallied three assists apiece.
Haleigh Timmer added 13 points for SDSU, followed by
Paige Meyer with seven.
Mesa Byom recorded five rebounds and dished a team-high four assists.
Kallie Theisen posted six rebounds and three steals.
The Jackrabbits trailed the Pioneers 12-11 after the opening 10 minutes, then outscored Denver 68-30 over the final three quarters. SDSU was a blistering 26-of-37 (70 percent) in the last 30 minutes. The Jackrabbits connected on 10-of-21 3-point attempts, finishing with at least 10 3-pointers for the second straight game.
The teams traded the lead eight times in the first half before the Jackrabbits were able to pull away with a 9-0 run in the second quarter to lead 22-14. SDSU ended the second quarter with six straight points, then started the third with an 8-0 run to make it 39-22. Mathiowetz had eight points during the 14-0 stretch.
Brooklyn Meyer scored seven points during a 13-point stretch to start the fourth quarter, making it a 32-point game at 64-32.
Denver was held to 28 percent field goal shooting. The Pios were led by 13 points from Jordan Jones, who averaged 21 points per game entering Saturday's contest.
SDSU made the most of its second-chance opportunities, grabbing eight offensive rebounds that resulted in 15 second-chance points. Denver tallied four offensive boards but did not score any second-chance points.
The Jackrabbits improve to 12-3 on the season and 2-0 in Summit League action. Denver slips to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.Â
