Jenna Currier and Gigi Hioki each won freestyle events to pace the South Dakota State women's swimming and diving team as it completed the home portion of its schedule Thursday afternoon at the Marshall Center Pool with a 180-115 defeat at the hands of Iowa State.
The Jackrabbits dropped to 2-3 in duals this season. Iowa State, which won 14 of the 16 events, improved to 1-3 overall.
A senior from Denison, Iowa, Currier claimed the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.44 seconds, out-touching the Cyclones' Grace Swoboda by a quarter of a second. Currier earlier anchored SDSU's runner-up 200 medley relay, teaming with Lily Esmas, Jessalyn Carpenter and Sara Juez for a time of 1 minute, 47.38 seconds.
Hioki, meanwhile, put the Jackrabbits on the board with a victory in the 200 freestyle by clocking in at 1:54.87. Teammate Aubrey Douds placed third in 1:58.68.
Sophomores Isabella Gnewuch and Emma Ingalls turned a 2-3 performance in the 100 butterfly for the Jackrabbits. Gnewuch was runner-up in 59.41 seconds, with Ingalls placing third in 1:00.19. Ingalls also was SDSU's top finisher in the 200 individual medley, posting a time of 2:12.98 to place third overall.
Currier and Hioki later teamed with Mia Pendleton and Hannah Miller for a runner-up finish in the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay. The Jackrabbit quartet notched a time of 3:35.35.
Four different swimmers won two individual events each for Iowa State, including Kendall Mallers (100 butterfly, 200 butterfly) and Anja Peck (100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley), who also competed on the winning 200 medley relay.
