ST. PAUL, Minn. — Jenna Currier won an individual title in the 50-yard freestyle and helped lead the South Dakota State women's swimming and diving team to runner-up finishes in a pair of relays Thursday on the opening day of the St. Thomas Invitational.
A senior from Denison, Iowa, Currier clocked the top time in the 50 freestyle during the morning preliminaries at Anderson Pool with a mark of 23.43 seconds, then came back during the evening session with a winning time of 23.30 seconds. Her time in the finals was an improvement of .32 seconds from her previous career best and vaulted Currier from 10th to second place on the SDSU career charts, trailing only Elisabeth Timmer's standard of 22.77 seconds established in 2022.
Currier opened the evening by swimming the leadoff leg of the 200 freestyle with a 23.38-second split. Hannah Miller, Sara Juez and Gigi Hioki made of the rest of the Jackrabbit quartet that logged a combined time of 1 minute, 34.17 seconds. Miller added a fifth-place individual finish in the 50 freestyle at 23.82 seconds.
In the final event of the night, Currier swam the butterfly leg of SDSU's second-place 400 medley relay. She teamed with Lily Esmas, Miller and Hioki for a season-best time of 3:48.11.
Fellow senior Marissa Branham also qualified for a four-person A final in200 individual medley. Branham slightly fell off her pace from the morning prelims to place fourth in 2:07.09.
In the B final of the 200 IM, Emma Ingalls turned in the Jackrabbits' top time in the event on the day with a mark of 2:06.64 to place sixth, followed by teammate Hailey Creary in seventh with a time of 2:07.82.
The University of South Dakota leads the four-team field with 407 points, while the remaining three squads are separated by 40 points with the Jackrabbits in second place with 230.

Competition resumes Friday with the preliminary rounds at 10 a.m. and event finals starting at 5:30 p.m.
