PUERTO AVENTURAS, Mexico - The South Dakota State women's basketball team ended its trip to Cancun with an 82-70 win over Kansas State Saturday.
SDSU had three players finish with double-digit scoring totals, paced by 18 points from
Brooklyn Meyer. The senior had an efficient outing, finishing 7-of-9 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. She also tallied eight rebounds, six assists and a pair of blocks, all team highs.
Madison Mathiowetz ended up with 16 points and also knocked down all four of her free-throw attempts. She handed out three assists.
Emilee Fox connected on her first four 3-point attempts and added a layup for 14 points on the day to go with four rebounds.
Hilary Behrens totaled nine points, five rebounds and two steals in 21 minutes on the floor, all career highs.
Hadley Thul and
Maggie Hartwig contributed seven points apiece.
The Jackrabbits and Wildcats traded buckets over the opening five minutes, which featured three ties and two lead changes. Then SDSU got five points from Mathiowetz during a 10-0 run to go up 18-10. Back-to-back K-State 3-pointers made it a two-point game after 10 minutes.
The Jackrabbits scored seven straight during the second quarter with layups from Meyer andHartwig, then Thul capped the run with the Jackrabbits' sixth 3-pointer of the day. SDSU led 37-30 at halftime.
Just after the break, Fox hit back-to-back 3-pointers that gave pushed the Jackrabbits ahead by 11. With 5:15 to play in the third, Meyer put SDSU put the Jacks up by double digits for good with a layup to lead 53-42. The Jackrabbits led by as many as 17 on their way to the 12-point win.
K-State's Taryn Sides scored 27 points and had five rebounds, both team highs, as the Wildcats slip to 5-4 overall.
The Jackrabbits improve to 7-2 on the year. They shot 52 percent for the game and knocked down 10 3-pointers, seven of which came in the first half.
NOTES
- SDSU has won each of the last two meetings against Kansas State but is 2-6 against the Wildcats for the all-time series.
- Brooklyn Meyer moved into sole possession of fifth place on SDSU's career blocks chart. She has 130 blocks for her career and passed Kallie Theisen (128). Gina Mouw is South Dakota State's career blocks leader with 189.
