BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State women's basketball team made quick work of Denver Thursday night in a 90-44 win over the Pioneers at First Bank & Trust Arena. The Jackrabbits built a double-digit lead in the opening quarter and shot 51% in the game for the 46-point win.
The victory moves the Jackrabbits to 14-4 on the year and 4-0 in the Summit League, setting up a battle of unbeatens Saturday afternoon as NDSU, also 4-0 In the Summit, visits Brookings.
Maggie Hartwig surpassed 1,000 points for her collegiate career in the victory and put together a solid night with 14 points, nine rebounds and a career-high five assists. She was 5-of-6 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
Hartwig was joined in double figures by
Brooklyn Meyer (18),
Madison Mathiowetz (15) and
Emilee Fox (11). Meyer also notched seven rebounds, four assists and the game's only block. Mathiowetz tallied three steals and a pair of assists. Both Mathiowetz and Fox connected on three 3-pointers.
After Meyer scored the first six points of the game, Denver put together an 8-0 run to take the lead. Mathiowetz followed with seven straight points of her own to give the Jacks the lead for good. Mathiowetz's run was the start of an 16-0 stretch for the Jackrabbits. SDSU shot 50% in the opening period to lead 22-12. The Jacks led 41-20 at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half.
The Jackrabbits posted a 42-24 advantage on the glass, including a 15-5 edge in offensive rebounds.
Hilary Behrens matched Hartwig's nine boards for the game high. SDSU had 19 second chance points.
SDSU tallied 25 assists on 33 made field goals.
Ellie Colbeck and Hartwig had five each to lead all players.
Mahli Abdouch had three assists. The Jackrabbits shot 51% for the game, above .500 for the sixth time this year. The teams knocked down 10 3-pointers, the sixth time this year SDSU has had at least 10 triples.
The Jacks locked in on the defensive end, forcing 20 Denver turnovers and holding the Pios to 35% field goal shooting.
Coryn Watts led Denver with 14 points.
NOTES
- South Dakota State is now 26-2 all-time against Denver and has won 10 straight meetings.
- Brooklyn Meyer surpassed 1,700 career points and moved into eighth place on SDSU's career scoring chart. She passed Brenda Davis (1,688 points, 2000-04). Meyer is fifth place for career scoring in SDSU's Division I era.
