BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State women's basketball team fell 76-68 to North Dakota State Saturday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Arena.
The Jackrabbits shot 47% from the field, but gave up 33 combined points on turnovers and second chance opportunities. SDSU led 35-32 at the halftime break, but was outscored 24-10 in the third quarter, creating a hole the Jacks could not climb out of.
The loss is South Dakota State's first in the Summit League regular season since the 2021-22 season. The Jackrabbits' streak of consecutive regular season victories ends at 67, which is the fifth-longest streak in NCAA history. South Dakota State is now 14-5 overall and 4-1 in Summit League action. North Dakota State improves to 16-2 on the year and 5-0 in the conference.
In a highly-anticipated matchup, SDSU's
Brooklyn Meyer and NDSU's Avery Koenen showed out for their respective squads. Meyer finished with 24 points, six rebounds, five blocks and a pair of steals. Koenen tallied 26 points, 13 boards, two blocks and two steals.
South Dakota State started the game perfect from the field and the free throw line to lead 8-4, but turned the ball over six times in the opening six minutes and led 8-6 at the media timeout. A late and-one sequence for
Ellie Colbeck closed out the first quarter with the Jacks ahead, 16-13.
An 11-4 run for NDSU, powered by six points from Koenen, pushed the Bison ahead, 24-20, four minutes into the second period.
Madison Mathiowetz responded with six straight to regain the lead at 25-24, then another 4-0 stretch for Mathiowetz put the Jacks up 32-28.
Emilee Fox knocked down a 3-pointer at the end of the half to give the Jacks a three-point lead at halftime, 35-32.
NDSU flipped the momentum after halftime, notching 9-0 and 7-0 runs to go up by 11 by the end of the third period, 56-45. South Dakota State trailed by 11 at 73-62 with less than a minute to play but cut the deficit to just five with consecutive and-one buckets in less than five seconds of game clock. Those were SDSU's final points of the game, however, and NDSU made three free throws down the stretch to hold off the Jackrabbits.
Mathiowetz scored 15 points for the Jackrabbits and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. The senior became the 45th member of South Dakota State's 1,000 point club in the contest. Mathiowetz also contributed three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
Katie Vasecka scored 11 points and gave out three assists. Nine of her points came in the second half.
After Koenen, Marisa Frost and Jocelyn Schiller scored 14 points apiece for the Bison. Frost also tallied five assists and four steals.
NOTES
- Brooklyn Meyer's five blocks against the Bison moved her into sole possession for third place on SDSU's career blocks chart. She now has 146 for her career, passing Tori Nelson (145).
- SDSU leads the all-time series against the Bison, 65-40, and has a 42-5 lead in the Division I era. Prior to Saturday, SDSU had won 24 straight meetings.
