GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The South Dakota State women's basketball team dominated on the road at North Dakota Wednesday night and came away with a 99-47 victory over the Fighting Hawks at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
Brooklyn Meyer was unstoppable in the paint, putting up 31 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks for the Jackrabbits. The senior was 11-of-17 from the field and went 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Nine of her rebounds came on the offensive end, which helped the Jacks post a 14-6 edge on the offensive glass and 24-4 advantage in second chance points.
Madison Mathiowetz also had a big night for SDSU. She scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with five rebounds, four steals, two assists and a block.
Meyer and Mathiowetz combined for 17 of SDSU's 19 first-quarter points as the Jacks led 19-10 after 10 minutes. The Jackrabbits continued to pull away in the second quarter, stretching their lead to 28 by halftime and as many as 53 in the second half.
The Jacks shot 61% for the game and 64% from the 3-point line with seven triples. SDSU grabbed 40 rebounds to UND's 17, had a 5-4 edge in blocks and 12-7 advance in steals.
Emilee Fox knocked down all three of her 3-point attempts and finished with 11 points for South Dakota State. The sophomore is 58% from the 3-point line this season and is the only player in the country shooting better than 50% with at least two 3-pointers per game. Fox also grabbed three rebounds and had two steals.
Brooklynn Felchle, a Bismarck, N.D. native, came off the bench to score eight points in her home state.
Mahli Abdouch scored seven points and
Hilary Behrens and
Hadley Thul added six points apiece.
Ellie Colbeck tied for the team lead with three assists.
North Dakota's Mackenzie Hughes led the Hawks with 18 points, followed by Finley Ohnstad with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
South Dakota State improves to 15-5 on the season and 5-1 in Summit League action. North Dakota is now 4-14 overall and 1-4 in the Summit League.
NOTES
- South Dakota State is now 41-41 in the all-time series with North Dakota. North Dakota's last win was in the 2003-04 season, prior to both teams' transition to Division I.
- This is Brooklyn Meyer's second 30-point game of the season and the fifth of her career. This is also the fourth double-double of the season for Meyer and the 17th of her career.
- Nine free throw makes sets a new career high for Brooklyn Meyer. Her previous high was eight, which she had done six times.
