OMAHA - Creighton came into its match with South Dakota State on Tuesday ranked fourth in the nation in blocks, and it showed in the 3-0 win over the Jackrabbits, as the Bluejays out-blocked the Jacks 11-3.
The loss drops SDSU to 3-8 on the season heading into a pair of home Summit League matches this weekend. Creighton, who won by the set scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18, improves to 4-8.
In addition to the blocking, Creighton hit .227 for the match and held the Jacks to a .096 hitting percentage. The Bluejay blocks played a role in that total, but the Jackrabbit hitters played a role as well.
"I though that we did a great job defensively, we made some great digs left and right, and our middle hitters made their defense work hard," said head coach Nanabah Allison-Brewer. "But we just struggled to get our outside hitters and right side hitters going tonight."
Ellyce Youngren played exception to the rule tonight though, finishing with a match-high 12 kills and a .391 hitting percentage (12-3-23).
Sarah Schulze and Alicia Runge both finished the match with nine kills to lead the Bluejays. Shulze and Jessica Houts led all players with four block assists.
The Jackrabbits return to action against Western Illinois on Friday and IUPUI on Saturday at Frost Arena. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
