South Dakota State freshman Fiona Jones' career-high 26 kills and career-high 18 digs paced the Jackrabbits in a 3-2, come-from-behind win over Western Illinois on Friday night at Frost Arena.
The Jacks, who improve to 4-8 overall and 3-2 in The Summit League with the win, won by the set scores of 25-20, 24-26, 24-26, 25-23, 15-12.
The Fighting Leathernecks fall to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Although thrilled that her team won in five sets, Jackrabbit head coach Nanabah Allison-Brewer thinks they could have won sooner.
"We need to come out right away and play with a lot of confidence, but we also need to continue to control that confidence and learn how to finish teams off."
The Jacks let set-point slip away in the second set. Up 24-23, WIU scored the next three points to win the set 26-24.
In control for most of the third set, the Leathernecks came back to tie the set at 23-all before eventually winning it, again by the score of 26-24.
SDSU turned the tables in the fourth set. Trailing 3-1, the Jacks rattled off seven straight points and never trailed again, winning the set 25-23.
The fifth and final set saw six ties and a pair of lead changes, but a Nicole Peters kill broke a 9-all tie, for the final lead change, as the Jacks won the set and the match on a WIU service error.
In addition to the career night for Jones, Kaitlin Klingemann finished with a career-high 14 kills and a team-high six block assists in the win.
Thyele Rechatiko doubled her career-high in kills from four to eight, but they always seemed to come when the Jacks needed them the most. She also added a career-high 46 set assists and a career-high 17 digs for her first double-double as a Jackrabbit.
Ellyce Youngren added 17 kills and a trio of block assists in the win.
The Jackrabbits look to remain undefeated at home on Saturday, when they welcome IUPUI to Frost Arena at 7 p.m.
The Jaguars fell in three sets at conference front-runner North Dakota State on Friday to fall to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in The Summit League.
