CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—Using a 19-2 run early in the first half, the South Dakota State women's basketball team defeated Northern Iowa, 74-60, Monday in front of 1,984 fans in McLeod Arena.
Freshman Macy Miller (Mitchell) scored a career-high 25 points, shooting 9 of 12 from the field and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line. Senior Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) tallied 19 points. Sophomores Kerri Young (Mitchell) and Chynna Stevens (Clark) each grabbed six rebounds.
After UNI jumped out to a 7-2 lead, the Jackrabbits forced the Panthers to miss their next 10 shots and turn the ball over 7 times. Freshman Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) and Waytashek scored seven and six points, respectively to fuel the run.
The Jacks led by 16, 36-20, with 1:06 left, but Northern Iowa sank two of its six first-half three-pointers with 27 seconds left to cut SDSU's lead going into halftime, 38-28.
In the second half, UNI used a 10-2 run to pull within four points, 46-42, at 16:34, but Waytashek scored the next six points to push the lead to 10 points, 52-42. The Panthers got to within 8 points three times but SDSU outscored Northern Iowa, 11-7, the final five minutes for the win.
SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston earned his 350th career win and Waytashek moved into 27th on South Dakota State's 1,000-Point Club list with 1,141 points.
The Jackrabbits open their eighth season of Summit League play Friday when they host Denver at 7 p.m. in Frost Arena.
