INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—Junior Nazya Thies led the South Dakota State volleyball team despite losing 25-15, 25-18 and 25-16 Friday night to IUPUI in Summit League action.
With the loss, the Jackrabbits fall to 1-19 overall and 0-4 in league play while the Jaguars improve to 12-6 and 3-1.
Thies led the squad with eight kills while sophomore Ashley Beaner (Sioux Falls) had seven kills and hit .333 for the match. Defensively, senior Lizzie Palmer (Sioux Falls) collected nine digs.
Logan Walling led IUPUI with 15 kills and 5 blocks. Alexis Mapes had a double-double with 29 set assists and a team-high 10 digs.
In the first set, the Jackrabbits trailed by no more than four points until IUPUI used a 9-2 run to win the set. Beaner collected three kills and hit .333 in the set for the Jacks.
SDSU took a 12-11 lead in the second set with a 5-0 run after Mikala Hora registered a kill and a service ace, and the Jaguars committed three errors. IUPUI responded with a 14-6 run to lead 2-0 in the match.
IUPUI jumped out to a 18-7 lead before the Jacks used a 3-0 run fueled by a Beaner kill and block to pull within 18-10 in the final set. The Jaguars outscored SDSU 7-6 to win the match.
The Jackrabbits return to action Saturday when they play Fort Wayne at 6 p.m.
