BROOKINGS, S.D.—The South Dakota State volleyball team concludes a three-match road swing this weekend when it travels to the Hoosier state to take on IUPUI Friday at 6 p.m. in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne Saturday at 6 p.m. in Fort Wayne.
The Jackrabbits (1-18, 0-3) are looking to snap a 14-match losing streak and end a 0-3 start in The Summit League. SDSU lost 3-0 at Denver Oct. 2.
IUPUI (12-6, 3-1) split a pair of league road matches this past weekend, losing at Oral Roberts in four sets and defeating Western Illinois in three. Fort Wayne (4-15, 1-3) won its first Summit League match, beating the Leathernecks in five sets in Macomb, Ill., but then lost in three sets to the Golden Eagles in Tulsa.

Setting the Scene
- South Dakota State looks to end its 14-match losing streak when it travels to Indiana this weekend. The last time the Jackrabbits lost more than 14 consecutive matches was when they finished the 2014 season with 15 consecutive losses. SDSU also has a 12-match Summit League road losing streak to shake.
- SDSU sports a 200-229 all-time road record and is 23-43 in road Summit League matches since 2007. The last time the Jackrabbits won a road conference match was Oct. 13, 2013, when they beat Omaha, 3-1. The last time the Jacks won a road match was Sept. 20, 2014, when they beat Chicago State, 3-2, in Chicago.
- The SDSU and IUPUI meet for the 17th time Friday. The Jaguars have won the last seven meetings and lead the series 10-6. The last Jackrabbits win vs. IUPUI was Sept. 16, 2011, when they won 3-2 in Frost Arena. The last road victory was Sept. 22, 2007, when the Jacks won 3-2.
- Fort Wayne leads the all-time series 18-4 and has won the last four meetings. SDSU's last win over the 'Dons was in five sets Oct. 27, 2012. South Dakota State is looking for its first road win in the series.
A Quick Glance at South Dakota State (1-18, 0-3)
- SDSU's starting lineup includes seniors Wagner Larson and Kacey Herrmann in the middle, junior Nazya Thies and sophomore Mikala Hora on the outside, sophomore Ashley Beaner on the right side, freshman Matttison Munger setting and senior Lizzie Palmer as the libero.
- Senior Alana Pengilly and freshman Ellie Benson are the first subs for the Jacks.
- The Jackrabbits are hitting .095 and averaging 8.51 kills per set. Hora leads the Jackrabbits in kills (135), Beaner in kills per set (2.13) and Larson has a team-leading .269 hitting percentage.
- Munger is South Dakota State's primary setter, but junior Brooke Leetham has come into matches to relieve Munger. The rookie is averaging 6.61 set assists while the team averages 8.03.
- Benson tops the team in service aces with 12.
- Palmer leads the defensive corps with a 3.48 digs per set average. Hora is second with a 2.54 average.
- The Jackrabbits are holding their own in blocking (75.0, 1.15 bps). Herrmann leads the team with 34 total blocks. Both Herrmann and Larson have five solo blocks each.
IUPUI (12-6, 3-1)
- IUPUI sits in fourth place in The Summit League standings after splitting this past weekend's matches at Oral Roberts (1-3) and at Western Illinois (3-0).
- The Jaguars are hitting .227 overall as a team with their offensive attack coming from outside hitter Kaitlyn Hickey. The senior leads the squad in kills per set (4.15) and is fourth in league matches.
- IUPUI has four players hitting higher than .200 with junior middle hitter Morgan Walling leading the way with a .325 hitting percentage. She is also fourth in The Summit League with a .356 hitting percentage in league-only matches.
- The Jaguars' offense runs through setter Alexis Mapes. The junior averages 9.48 set assists per set and 2.29 digs per set.
- IUPUI is dominating its competition when it comes to blocks. They have 147.5 total blocks this season, including 36 solo blocks, and is second in the league in blocks per set (2.40). Sophomore middle hitter Abby Horn leads the team (1.02). Five other Jags have 30-or-more total blocks.

BROOKINGS, S.D.—Wagner Larson led the South Dakota State volleyball team, but the Jackrabbits lost 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-20) to IUPUI in Summit League play in Frost Arena.
Larson had six kills and a career-high six block assists. Tiara Gibson and Ashley Beaner each had six kills.
Jessi Henter had 12 set assists, 3 service aces and 6 digs. Alanna Pengilly had a match-high 18 digs and Kacey Herrmann added 10 digs.
Kaitlyn Hickey led the IUPUI attack with 14 kills and 11 digs for the double-double. Kelly Wachtel added 10 kills while Meredith Farkas had a team-high 16 digs.
Fort Wayne (4-15, 1-3)
- Fort Wayne won its first Summit League match when it defeated Western Illinois (3-2) on the road. It is tied for sixth in the league standings.
- The Mastodons are hitting .172 overall as a team with their offensive attack coming from outside hitter Somer Johnson. The junior leads the squad in kills per set (3.96).
- IPFW has three players hitting higher than .200 with senior middle hitter Sara Heckman leading the way with a .206 hitting percentage.
- Freshman setter Madison Jaqua runs the Mastodons' offense, averaging 8.58 set assists and 2.32 digs per set.
- Fort Wayne has 136.5 total blocks this season, including 41 solo blocks. Sophomore middle hitter Natalie Seiler leads the team (0.94). IPFW also has five other players with 20-or-more total blocks.

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Ashley Beaner led the South Dakota State volleyball team but the Jacks lost 3-0 (25-10, 25-11 and 25-20) at Fort Wayne in Summit League action.
Beaner had a team-high seven kills and hit .286. Kacey Herrmann had nine digs and Alanna Pengilly registered eight digs.
Emily Spencer led Fort Wayne with a match-best 14 kills. Somer Johnson recorded nine kills, five service aces, five digs and two solo blocks.
In the first set, Fort Wayne used a 9-3 run early to take a 12-6 lead. Emily Spencer had five of her eight kills in the set during the stretch. The Jacks got as close as 17-10 but the Mastodons scored the last eight points for the set.
Another early 11-2 run by Fort Wayne in the second set put SDSU down 13-4. The Mastodons led 21-9 late and took a two-set lead on a Jackrabbit error.
The Jackrabbits were within two points for most of the third set before IPFW took a 19-13 lead. SDSU came back with a 7-3 run with kills from Wagner Larson, Nazya Thies and Beaner, a block from Larson and Jessi Henter and three Fort Wayne errors to trail 23-20. The Mastodons closed the match with a Spencer kill and a block.

DENVER—Nazya Thies and Mikala Hora led the South Dakota State volleyball team, but lost 25-16, 25-23 and 25-15 to Denver in Hamilton Gym.
Thies and Hora each had eight kills and Hora added seven digs. Ashley Beaner registered seven kills. Defensively, Ellie Benson had nine digs.
SDSU and Denver were tied at 13 in the first set before the Pioneers used a 12-3 run for the win.
The Jackrabbits took a 13-11 lead in the second set, but DU regained the lead at 15-13. After two more ties, the Pioneers used a 5-1 run to take a 22-18 lead. SDSU pulled within 24-21 with a kill from Mattison Munger. A Denver error and a Hora service ace pulled the Jacks to within one, 24-23, but the Pioneers closed the match with a kill.
SDSU jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the third set, capitalizing on Denver errors, a block from senior Carly Gerving and Beaner and a Thies kill. The Pioneers responded with a 9-1 run to take the lead for good.
Milestones
- Lizzie Palmer and Alana Pengilly could record 1,000 career digs this season. Palmer stands at 922 while Pengilly has 831.
- Kacey Herrmann has 677 digs and needs 23 for 700 career digs.
