FARGO, N.D.—A 15-0 run with just over four minutes to play was the difference as the South Dakota State women's basketball team defeated North Dakota State, 81-63, Sunday afternoon in front of 2,422 fans in Scheels Arena in Summit League action.
The Jackrabbits, 12-3, 2-0, were led by sophomore guard Macy Miller (Mitchell) who finished with a game-high 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field. Classmate Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) registered her second double-double of the season and third of her career with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Junior guard Kerri Young (Mitchell) tallied 16 points and game-high 4 assists. Junior forward Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) just missed a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds. She and Thompson combined for seven blocks.
NDSU, 5-10, 0-2, was led by Taylor Thunstedt's 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range. Marena Whittle added 14 points.
After starting the fourth quarter with a 62-57 lead, SDSU gave up four consecutive points, allowing NDSU to pull within one, 62-61, with 7:01 to play. Miller sank a free throw at 5:47 and the Jackrabbits scored the final 19 of 21 points, including the 15-0 run fueled by Miller's nine points in a four-plus minute stretch.
In the first quarter, SDSU took a 20-9 lead at 3:24 after Thompson capped an 11-0 run with a layup. NDSU responded with a 11-0 run to tie the game at 20-20. Guebert sank a free throw at the end of the first quarter to put the Jacks up 21-20.
The Jackrabbits sprinted to a 28-20 lead with seven-straight points to start the second quarter. The Bison cut the lead to five points at 4:14, but Young sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key after an Ober block to put SDSU up 35-27.
A driving layup by Thunstedt with 1:24 left in the half cut South Dakota State's lead to four, 37-33. Miller answered with a jumper before Spier scored the final points of the quarter. SDSU went into halftime with a 39-35 lead and shooting 51.6 percent from the field.
Thompson and Ober combined for 18 points in the first half, shooting 8 of 12. The duo also collected nine rebounds and five blocks. SDSU dominated in the paint, scoring 22 points to NDSU's 8.
The Jackrabbits return to Frost Arena Thursday when they host Omaha at 7 p.m.
