Dakota Leonhard) competed at the Emporia State Spring Open on Friday, representing the only two throwers competing on weekend. Â

The pole vault group kicked off the outdoor action at the Tulsa Duals for the Jacks. The momentum carried into Saturday as State had a total of 13 student-athletes and four relay teams finish top-three of their respective events.

Sophomore
Kendra Dykstra recorded a couple of top-five finishes on Saturday afternoon. She ran the 1,500m first, finishing third (4:46.78), which was her first career top-three finish in the event.

Later in the afternoon, Dykstra posted a fourth-place finish (2:19.52) in the 800m, which was her seventh career top-five finish, third time outdoors.

Evan Hieber posted a personal-best in his second attempt at the 110m hurdles, finishing fifth (15.77) and beating his previous-best mark by 1.23 seconds.

Miatta Flemister-Smith, the anchor of the women's 4x100m relay, improved her personal-best in 100m dash by 0.01 seconds. She finished fourth (12.19), with her mark tying for 10th-best on the school's all-time list with Melanie Sunding (1984).

The Jackrabbits will split among three meets on March 30, traveling to the SMSU Mustang Open at Marshall, Minn., Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto, Calif., and the San Francisco Distance Carnival at San Francisco, Calif.

However, SDSU will host the Ruth Marske Invitational at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on March 24 for high school teams. Another high school meet hosted by the Jacks is the Scott Underwood Invitational on April 2.

The Summit League Indoor Athlete of the Year will be announced next Wednesday, March 21, concluding the league's indoor accolades.

Vollmer recorded her first official discus throw in the 2018 outdoor campaign. It was her second-best throw to start a season (threw 147-02.00 at the start of the 2016 outdoor, Vance Butler Invite) and first time competing at the ESU Spring Open.

It's Vollmer's seventh time finishing in the top three of the event for her career. She was 1-02.00 feet away from the winner (Tyra Bickham, Wichita State) and one foot from the runner up (Rebecca Finley, UMKC). There were a total of 39 student-athletes competing in the event.

The Savage, Minn. native, is coming off of a strong indoor season where she competed in the shot put throughout the season, including a 10th-place finish at The Summit League Indoor Championships. She posted the school's eighth-best throw all-time in the event.

She was named one of SDSU's preseason athletes to watch by The Summit League this outdoor season. She has the school record in the discus throw, which she set last year at the NCAA West Prelims (173-11.00).

Leonhard notched a 15th-place finish in his first outdoor competition. There were 37 competitors in the event. It is his fifth career throw in the event at South Dakota State.

The Fredericksburg, Pa. native, is coming off of an indoor season where he competed in five shot put event and a season-best toss of 47-09.00.
Â
Last year, the sophomore broke the school record in his second career meet, throwing the javelin 195-04.00 and finishing in the top-three at every meet, including two wins. He was not able to compete in last year's outdoor championships due to injury.
