ESTERO, Fla. - South Dakota State knocked off No. 15 UCLA 76-66 Saturday at Hertz Arena during day two of the Gulf Coast Showcase. Four players in double figures led the Jackrabbits to the upset victory over the Bruins.
Tori Nelson and
Lindsey Theuninck scored 11 points apiece for the Jacks, followed by 10 each from
Paige Meyer and
Paiton Burckhard.
The Jackrabbits trailed by six after the first quarter of action but used a 12-point swing in the second period to take a six-point lead into halftime. Theuninck's second 3-pointer of the second frame brought the game to a 23-all tie and
Myah Selland put the Jacks ahead with a pair of free throws at 25-23. The Bruins tied the game again at 28-28 and 30-30 before a 7-1 run to end the half gave SDSU a 37-31 lead after 20 minutes.
UCLA clawed back within two of the Jacks near the end of the third quarter. A technical foul with one second on the clock gave Meyer the opportunity to push the Jackrabbit margin to four and SDSU led 50-46 with 10 minutes to play.
Burckhard and
Madysen Vlastuin combined to score the first five points of the fourth quarter and extend the SDSU advantage to nine. The Jacks held off the Bruins over the final frame and went 8-for-12 from the free throw line in the final 90 seconds to seal the upset win.
Meyer was held to 2-for-9 from the field in the game but went 6-for-7 from the line for her 10 points. The freshman gave out six assists and was one of four Jacks to grab four rebounds apiece.
Nine of Theuninck's points came from beyond the arc. She was 3-of-4 from the field and sank two free throws.
Selland chipped in nine points and three rebounds in 14 minutes of action.
SDSU was 41 percent from the field and 45 percent from the 3-point line.
The Bruins were led by Ilnar'l Thomas' 18 points and seven boards.
NOTES
- The Jackrabbits are now 15-33 against ranked opponents in the NCAA DI era.
- Theuninck and Nelson lead the Jackrabbits in scoring for the first time this season.
- Myah Selland reached the 500 career rebounds milestone in the game.
- The Jackrabbits have had four double-digit scorers in four of its six games.
- Saturday's win is the first SDSU victory away from Frost Arena.
