LARAMIE, WY – The South Dakota State volleyball team fell to the host Wyoming Cowgirls 3-1 in their final match of the Rumble in the Rockies tournament on Saturday.
The Jackrabbits hit .207 as a team—including a .457 clip in the second set—with 47 kills and 22 errors on 121 attempts.
Katie Van Egdom and
Sylvie Zgonc led the way with 13 kills apiece while
Elyse Winter recorded a .500 hitting percentage.
Raegen Reilly handed out 23 assists and
Rylee Martin dished 17.
Stella Winterfeld led the defense with 13 digs to lead a team-total of 45 and while
Brogan Beck had five of the eight total blocks in the match.
Set 1: Despite the set starting with an exchanging of errors, Wyoming's hitting percentage of .600 deemed to be too much for the Jackrabbits as the Cowgirls quickly established a 7-3 lead. A series of scoring runs for the home team and cold hitting for SDSU ended the set 25-11.
Set 2: SDSU came out swinging, as did Van Egdom, who scored the first four points for the Jackrabbits. A 7-1 run pushed SDSU to the 16-12 lead. Wyoming rallied to make it a one point game before an ace from
Faith Saewert and back-to-back kills from Van Egdom sealed the 25-19 victory.
Set 3: The Cowboys flew out to a 6-0 lead to start and didn't slow down. SDSU fought back to only be down three with a score of 10-7, but Wyoming continued control until the 25-17 final.
Set 4: An ace from Reilly and four straight kills helped push SDSU to a hot 7-0 start, but Wyoming clawed back to make it a 10-10 game. The Cowgirls eventually slid out to a 21-16 lead until 6-1 run sealed by a block from Beck tied the match at 22, but the Cowgirls scored the final three points.
