The South Dakota State women's swimming and diving team competes in its home pool for the first time this season Friday afternoon, hosting Nebraska in nonconference dual action.

The Jackrabbits enter the matchup with a 1-2 record in dual competition after splitting a tri-dual against Minnesota (L, 201-94) and Summit League rival St. Thomas (W, 154-.5-145) on Oct. 18. Nebraska is 3-2 overall this season, most recently defeating Kansas by a 182-117 margin on Nov. 1.
LAST TIME OUT: Jackrabbit swimmers and divers combined for four events titles over two days of competition at the Huskies-Coyote Invite held Nov. 1-2 in Rochester, Minnesota.
Sophomore Gigi Hioki was the big winner for SDSU as she claimed three event titles including winning the 500-yard freestyle on both days. A native of Liberty Lake, Washington, Hioki clocked a winning time of 5 minutes, 8.01 seconds in the 500 on Friday, then improved on that time Saturday by touching the wall for the final time ahead of the rest of the field in 5:07.63.
Hioki opened the two-day meet by winning the 200 freestyle in 1:53.23.
Also victorious for the Jackrabbits was Anna Mei Castro in 3-meter diving. The sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, turned in a score of 256.30 points over six dives on Friday, then placed fourth on the 1-meter board Saturday with 221.35 points.
In the 100 backstroke, Lily Esmas paced SDSU with a third-place showing, 59.31 seconds on Friday.
Two other Jackrabbits tallied individual third-place finishes on Saturday as Marissa Branham earned bronze in the 200 breaststroke, 2:26.66, and freshman Kailee Crane placed third in the 200 individual medley, 2:11.17.
Fourth-place finishes in the pool were turned in by Poppy Mead in the 1,650 freestyle (18:00.10) and Emma Ingalls in the 200 butterfly (2:10.56). Fellow freshman Isabella Gnewuch came in fifth in the 200 butterfly, 2:10.95, while Esmas (200 backstroke, 2:09.66) and Emma Schultz (100 freestyle, 53.69 seconds) also contributed fifth-place individual showings.
In the team race, the Jackrabbits ended up third out of five teams with 1,799.5 points. Northern Iowa claimed the team title with 2,098 points, with South Dakota taking second with 2,008.5 points. Host St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls finished fourth and fifth with respective point totals of 1,389 and 1,097.
PEAK PERFORMERS: South Dakota State's Gigi Hioki was honored Oct. 22 as the Summit League Peak Women's Swimmer of the Week.
A sophomore from Liberty Lake, Washington, Hioki paced the Jackrabbits in all three of her individual races in an Oct. 18 tri-dual against Minnesota and league foe St. Thomas. She placed third overall in both the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 52.69 seconds) and 500 freestyle (5:09.64). She also finished fifth overall in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.51 seconds.
Hioki lowered her times in all three of her events, including dropping nearly 10 seconds in the 500 freestyle from her season debut at Iowa State on Oct. 10. In addition, she anchored the Jackrabbits' 400 freestyle relay that finished fifth in 3:32.54.
The previous week, on Oct. 15, the Jackrabbits' Anna Mei Castro was selected as the Summit League Peak Women's Diver of the Week.
A sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, Castro led SDSU's diving crew in a season-opening dual at Iowa State on Oct. 10. She was runner-up on the 3-meter board with a score of 234.07 over six dives and also placed fourth in the 1-meter competition with 225.82 points.
PRESEASON POLL: The South Dakota State women's swimming and diving team has been picked to finish third in the 2024-25 Summit League standings , according to a preseason polls announced in early October.
SDSU collected 26 points to stand behind Denver (36 points) and South Dakota (31 points). The defending champion Pioneers received six first-place votes to take the top spot, with USD gaining the other first-place vote.
The Jackrabbits placed fifth out of eight teams at last season's league championships.
In addition, Gigi Hioki and Anna Mei Castro were named swimmers and divers to watch for the upcoming season.
A sophomore from Liberty Lake, Washington, Hioki excelled in the freestyle events for the Jackrabbit women last season, placing seventh in both the 200 and 1,650 freestyle at the league championships.
Castro, a sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, recorded a ninth-place finish in 1-meter diving at the 2024 Summit League Championships and added a 15th-place effort on the 3-meter board.
A LOOK AHEAD: The Jackrabbits will continue with action at home Nov. 15 by making up a dual against Iowa Central that was originally scheduled for Oct. 19. The combined dual with the men's squad is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Marshall Center Pool.
