KANSAS CITY, Mo. - UMKC picked-up its first-ever win over South Dakota State on the volleyball court on Thursday in Kansas City, as the Jackrabbits squandered a 2-0 lead in the match, only to fall 3-2 at Swinney Recreation Center on the UMKC campus.
The Kangaroos, who won by the set scores of 16-25, 28-30, 25-22, 25-20 and 15-7, pick up their first Summit League win of the season, compared to five losses, and improve to 5-11 overall.
The Jackrabbits fall to 5-9 overall and 4-3 in league play, with all of those losses coming on the road and all without the services of sophomore standout Kelli Fiegen, who remains sidelined with an injury.
Ellyce Youngren led the Jacks and tied with UMKC's Jamie Hagerman for match-high honors with 19 kills. Fiona Jones added 15 kills and Kelly Herrmann 11 in the loss. Jones also added 17 digs for her team-high seventh double-double. Thyele Rechatiko led the Jacks with 33 set assists and added 12 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Kelsey Knoche added 17 kills for the Roos in the win.
The Jacks ran away with the first set 25-16 and then hung on to win a back-and-forth battle in the second set by the score of 30-28.
SDSU led by as many as four points at 18-14 in the third set, but UMKC used a 5-1 run to tie the set at 19-all and used that momentum to propel them to the 25-22 win.
The Kangaroos used that momentum though the fourth and fifth set seal their first-ever win over the Jacks in their seventh try.
The Jacks get a travel day on Friday before they return to action at Southern Utah on Saturday. The Thunderbirds lost a 3-0 contest to Summit League front-runner North Dakota State on Thursday in Cedar City, Utah.
