DENVER—Junior Nazya Thies and sophomore Mikala Hora led the South Dakota State volleyball team Friday night, but lost 25-16, 25-23 and 25-15 to Denver in Hamilton Gym.
The loss dropped the Jackrabbits to 1-18 overall and 0-3 in The Summit League while the Pioneers improved to 15-4, 3-1.
"We did some good things at moments, but we have to learn to sustain that discipline for the entirety of the set," first-year head coach Nicole Cirillo said.
Thies (Winside, Neb.) and Hora (Yankton) each had eight kills and Hora added seven digs. Sophomore Ashley Beaner (Sioux Falls) registered seven kills. Defensively, senior Ellie Benson (Sioux Falls) had nine digs.
SDSU and Denver were tied at 13 in the first set before the Pioneers used a 12-3 run for the win.
The Jackrabbits took a 13-11 lead in the second set, but DU regained the lead at 15-13. After two more ties, the Pioneers used a 5-1 run to take a 22-18 lead. SDSU pulled within 24-21 with a kill from freshman Mattison Munger (Council Bluffs, Iowa). A Denver error and a Hora service ace pulled the Jacks to within one, 24-23, but the Pioneers closed the match with a kill.
SDSU jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the third set, capitalizing on Denver errors, a block from senior Carly Gerving and Beaner and a Thies' kill. The Pioneers responded with a 9-1 run to take the lead for good.
Kayla Principato led Denver with 13 kills while Piyuska Boteju had a double-double with 18 set assists and a match-high 13 digs.
