BROOKINGS, S.D.—The South Dakota State volleyball team returns to the road when it travels to Denver for an 8 p.m. match Friday in Hamilton Gymnasium.
The Jackrabbits (1-17, 0-2) are looking to snap a 13-match losing streak and end a 0-2 start in The Summit League. SDSU lost 3-1 to Omaha and 3-2 to Oral Roberts in the opening weekend of league play.
Denver (14-4, 2-1) had a six-match winning streak snapped this past weekend when it won at Fort Wayne (3-0), but was upset in five sets at IUPUI. The Pioneers defeated North Dakota State Tuesday in three matches. DU was picked to win The Summit League title.

Setting the Scene
- South Dakota State will be looking to end its 13-match losing streak when it travels to Denver Friday. The last time the Jackrabbits lost more than 13 consecutive matches was when they finished the 2014 season with 15 consecutive losses. SDSU also has an 11-match Summit League road losing streak to shake.
- SDSU sports a 200-228 all-time road record and is 23-42 in road Summit League matches since 2007. The last time the Jackrabbits won a road conference match was Oct. 13, 2013, when they beat Omaha, 3-1. The last time the Jackrabbits won a road match was Sept. 20, 2014, when they beat Chicago State, 3-2, in Chicago.
- The SDSU and Denver met for the sixth time Friday, and the Pioneers have won the last four meetings. The last Jackrabbit win vs. DU was Sept. 16, 1989, when they won 3-0 in the Briar Cliff Invitational in Sioux City, Iowa.
A Quick Glance at South Dakota State (1-17, 0-2)
- SDSU has settled into a starting lineup that has seniors Wagner Larson and Kacey Herrmann in the middle, junior Nazya Thies and sophomore Mikala Hora on the outside, sophomore Ashley Beaner on the right side, freshman Matttison Munger setting and senior Lizzie Palmer as the libero.
- Senior Alana Pengilly and freshman Ellie Benson are the first subs for the Jacks.
- Now that the Jackrabbits are two matches into league play, they are hitting .097 and averaging 8.45 kills per set. Hora leads the Jackrabbits in kills (127), Beaner in kills per set (2.12) and Larson has a team-leading .270 hitting percentage.
- Munger is South Dakota State's primary setter, but junior Brooke Leetham has come into matches to relieve Munger. The rookie is averaging 657 set assists while the team averages 8.00.
- Benson tops the team in service aces with 12.
- Palmer leads the defensive corps with a 3.58 digs per set average. Hora is second with a 2.55 average.
- The Jackrabbits are holding their own in blocking (72.0, 1.16 bps). Herrmann leads the team with 33 total blocks. Both Herrmann and Larson have five solo blocks each.
Denver (14-4, 2-1)
- Denver sits in fourth place in The Summit League standings after defeating North Dakota State in three sets Tuesday.
- The Pioneers are hitting .255 overall as a team with their offensive attack coming from right side hitter Kayla Principato. The sophomore leads the squad in kills per set (2.72).
- Denver has10 players hitting higher than .200 with senior middle hitter Sarah Schmid leading the way with a .422 hitting percentage. She is also third in The Summit League with a .405 hitting percentage in league-only matches.
- DU runs a 6-2 offense with junior setter Monique Domme and sophomore setter Piyusha Boteju. Domme averages 5.76 set assists and 2.10 digs per set while Boteju averages 4.97 set assists.
- The Pioneers are dominating their competition when it comes to blocks. The have 186.5 total blocks this season, including 28 solo blocks. Schmid leads the team (1.34) and The Summit League in league-only matches (2.00) in blocks per set. Denver also has four other players with 30-or-more total blocks.

DENVER—Ashley Beaner led the Jackrabbit attack but the South Dakota State volleyball team lost 25-23, 25-11 and 25-15 at Denver in a Summit League match.
Beaner had a team-best seven kills while middle blockers Wagner Larson and Tiara Gibson each had six kills.
Kacey Herrmann recorded a team-best 15 digs and Alanna Pengilly added 10 digs.
Nola Basey led the Denver attack with a match-high 15 kills. Sara Schmid and Moni Corrujedo each had 10 kills. Kate Acker collected 14 digs.

BROOKINGS, S.D.—Mikala Hora led the South Dakota State University volleyball team with 15 kills but the Jackrabbits suffered a 19-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 15-10 loss to Oral Roberts in The Summit League action at Frost Arena.
With 291 fans in attendance, Hora and the Jackrabbits used a 9-0 run to record the first set win. A Hora kill started the run and gave SDSU an 11-8 lead. Mattison Munger recorded two service aces during the run. Ashley Beaner added two kills before Hora ended the set with a kill and the 25-19 win.
Oral Roberts opened the second set with an 11-4 run before the Jackrabbits rallied, eventually taking a 24-21 lead after back-to-back Munger aces. However, the Golden Eagles closed the set with five-straight points.
The teams traded the lead in the third set before Nazya Thies gave the Jacks a 24-23 lead with a kill. An Oral Roberts hitting error allowed SDSU to win.           Â
SDSU used a 5-1 run to start the fourth set before ORU rallied to take a 15-11 lead. The Jacks cut the lead to 21-19 but it was as close as they could get.
Oral Roberts used a 6-1 run to grab the lead in the fifth set.
Beaner finished with 11 kills and 4 block assists while Wagner Larson had 10 kills and tied her career high with 7 total blocks. Munger recorded her third double-double of the season with 40 set assists and 13 digs. She also had a career-high five service aces.
Defensively, Lizzie Palmer had a match-high 27 digs while Hora added 13 and Ellie Benson 12 digs.
Laura Milos led Oral Roberts with 21 kills and 18 digs. Nika Mostahinic added 17 kills and 13 digs. Tori Rose had a team-high 20 digs.
Milestones
- Lizzie Palmer and Alana Pengilly could record 1,000 career digs this season. Palmer stands at 917 while Pengilly has 826.
- Kacey Herrmann has 674 digs and needs 26 for 700 career digs.
- Ashley Beaner registered her 300th career kill this past weekend. The right side hitter finished with 21 kills in two matches.
Double-Doubles
- Mikala Hora recorded her third and fourth career double-doubles Sept. 25-26. The outside hitter had 13 kills and 15 digs vs. Omaha and 15 kills and 13 digs against Oral Roberts.
- Rookie Mattison Munger registered her third career double-double in the five sets vs. Oral Roberts. The setter had 40 set assists and 13 digs.
SDSU Faithful
- Jackrabbit fans are loyal and it shows as SDSU is third in The Summit League in home attendance (653) and fourth in home attendance average (327).
